Could be a couple of things. On my 1990 Turbo, the insulation on the wires desintergrated down by the sensor. I never had them touch, which would have triggered the oil level light, but I did splice in new wires back to the top of the engine to prevent that from happening.
The little plastic float in the oil sensor might have a leak and is now filled with oil instead of air. Sludge could have built up on hinge, keeping the float from moving. It is a simple matter to pull the sensor for inspection, but you do have to do it with the sump drained.
