The good news is that the mechanic did do a reasonable job. The bad news is that I don't recognize any of those fault codes. I'll have to check my LH 2.4.2 book this evening to check them out.

I'll check the codes, but I'd be very resistant to replacing the ECU due to a lumpy idle and a restart issue. Yes, there are faults that can go away when things get warm, but not usually inside the ECU. And the idle problem has been around for two years- it could be entirely separate from the restart problem, or the sign of whatever is wrong is going more wrong. But I'll stick by two problems here.

When he said the fuel system was OK, what did that mean? Did he do pressure, leak-down, and flow checks? Those aren't simple or quick.

I don't know what the coolant gas temperature is, or why it wouldn't hold pressure. There is a coolant reservoir cap that might not hold pressure - that wouldn't cause start or idle problems, but you'd be loosing coolant. There is a coolant temperature sensor located underneath the intake manifold (eeuroparts 9357021 ) - if that were leaking, I'd also assume that it wasn't working properly. That would be the coolant sensor I referred to. Not sure if the 2.4.2 N/A has an intake temp sensor, now that I think about it - I'll look that up with the fault codes. May only be a turbo item.

There are two coolant temperature sensors - the one under the intake manifold (9357021) goes to the ECU; the one on the side of the block, just above the transmission (9108921) runs the temperature gauge. Why are you replacing the temperature gauge sensor?

It sounds like the restart problem isn't a lack of restart - it starts OK, but then dies? That sounds more like an inability to hold idle. That would point to either temperature sensing or a sticky AIC. If it just wouldn't catch, that would point more to a fuel problem (leak down).

I'll check the codes tonight. The right thing to do is to clear the codes, and then see if any reappear. Some of those codes may have been set a year or two ago, or more; they may not apply. but if you get a bunch of codes with no apparent faults, you blame the computer. Not always a good assumption. An expensive one, yes.

I would have thought the tech would check the AIC, given that the engine has an idle problem.

I'll get back to you later on those codes.
