You shouldn't be using 12-point sockets when you need to grip those bolt heads. Get thee to a Sears and pick up the proper six-point socket. A 1/2-inch (or better) breaker bar will be your friend, and you'll want to grab a 3-4 foot length of pipe and slide it over the end of the breaker bar.

Using STEADY pressure, lever the whole works from the end of the pipe. You're multiplying the torque big time this way, and smoothness counts. Don't jump on the thing -- that will probably break the connector off your breaker bar or snap the lug bolt if you're not careful. I find it's easier to lift on the end of the pipe, so you can sense how much pressure you're applying. Steady pressure applied with gradual increase should prompt your bolt to let go, probably with a loud pop, and you'll be golden then.

Rule of thumb: try to avoid anything but 6-point sockets when you can. If they encounter too much resistance, they often will strip and round off bolt heads.
