#1: On Cape Cod in about 1972 or 73 in a VW beetle I drove through a puddle that had the water breaking above the tops of the headlights. There are real advantages to having a rear engine with the air intake 2 1/2 feet above the road. Leaked not a drop, but the brakes took a while to dry out!

#2: In a 1978 VW Scirocco drove into a fog-light deep puddle about 35 yards long. Died part way through. A guy in a jacked up pick up comes along side and says, "Not enough ground clearance." Then a cop comes up behind and pushes me out. Car restarts on the 3rd or 4th try and I drive away. No leaks or later issues with the car due to water.

#3: In about 1989, in an '86 GTI in Peabody, MA, drove down a flooded main street for about 150 yards in water above the front bumper. Car was fine, no leaks. No water in engine, No later issues.

#4: Same car in 1992, drove through bumper-deep seawater on the main street of Swampscott, MA when a hurricane was coming and the ocean was on the road. Turning off onto a side street there was a dip and the water came up over the hood. No leaks, or issues, although the car almost died at one point. Then it rained to beat all (hurricane hit) and I drove around a lot to get all the ocean off the car. Again, no issues. Sold car with no rust in 1997.

However, when the opportunity presented itself yesterday to drive through about 12" of water in my 9K I said no thanks. I am olde now and not quite as stupid! At least most of the tiime.
