It took some time removing the black inserts from the Aero panels, removing the original taupe velour inserts from the CSE panels, then installing the Aero black inserts into the CSE taupe panels. They are held in with 10 funky "rivets". Think of it as the insert having 10 plastic legs/tabs that pass through holes in the panel, then the end of each leg/tab is melted to form a blob of plastic that holds it firmly against the panel (similar to a metal rivet). I had to break off each plastic blob, then when I installed the insert into the panel, I used a very small screw with a flat washer and a lock washer under it, screwing it into the leg that I broke the blob off of. The leg was hollow, so the sheet metal screw could grab hold of it and pull tightly against the panel.

I had thought about also replacing the bottom taupe storage compartment with the black one, but then decided it would be too much color going on with the interior of the door. I also went back and forth as to which color pull-handle to use, and felt the black matched the best. Gives it a real sporty look now, adding to the other touches of black that are throughout the interior.

The wood door caps match the dash perfectly, and are held in with screws that are permanently attached to the underside of the cap. I had to drill 4 holes into the top of each panel, then passed the cap screws into the holes and tightened the nuts that were supplied with it. I used lipstick on each end of all the screws, then pressed the cap onto the top of the panel to give a "blueprint" of where to drill the holes. The only glitch I had was that the screw holding the air vent grille to the top of the rear panel now needed to be longer since the thickness of the wood added to the length of the screw needed. The dealer showed that there are separate screws used for when the wood cap is installed, but I felt the local home improvement store was a cheaper and faster route. Same goes for the black plastic surround for the front door lock knob, but I haven't gotten the deeper ones yet since the original ones have stayed put so far.

All in all, I'm extremely pleased with how it all came out. I also have the rear ashtray in wood. Now all I need is the wood steering wheel.

Funny thing about the '98 is that they only used wood on the dash. In older years, they put wood on the tranny shifter, console cover, and in '93, the pass. side a/c vent.

Thanks again, turrbo, for posting the pics for me!!!!!

Joe
