the preferred way. In fact, the Haynes manual procedure is removing the whole axle. Since Saab began using Loctite on the end splines, people here say it is hard to get the axle out of the CV joint using Quasi's procedure. And a post some time back by long-time poster George recommends pulling the axle and doing the swap on the bench. My indy says he pulls the axle, saying it's faster and easier to do the job out of the car.
I have to do this on my daughter's car and I'm just swapping the axles for rebuilts, as the boots have been open awhile--and in winter, too. But FYI, eEuroparts has the rebuilt axles on back order.
