the gasket's only been there for a little while, so it should still be good.
However, if you get the headgasket kit, it comes with a valve cover gasket, so you'll have an extra.
Let me start by saying I've never done a headgasket job, but I looked into it because I think I'm coming up on one soon for my 88 (and maybe the 91 also!).
How many hours it takes depends on how fast you are. I'm kinda slow as a DIY mechanic (at least in comparison to others on the board!). I've heard of some doing the headgasket r&r in a weekend--I'm sure it would take me longer.
In comparison to the slave cylinder job, I'd say it is easier, but also more complicated. Easier because you're not dealing with a big, heavy, awkward transmission (although the head is pretty heavy too!), and because you don't have to get underneath the car. But more complicated because you're dealing with the engine--a lot is going on in there! Having never taken an engine apart, it seems really daunting, although I am looking forward to better understanding how things work.
There's also a few "while you're at it"s with this job, like timing chain, timing chain tensioner, etc. Search the board, and the Townsend website has a 900 HG procedure that's pretty identical to a 9000. Lots of resources--let us know how it goes.
Good luck.
