Mine broke 7 years ago and it cost a lot to replace. 1500 or 1600 included removal of the head and replacment of 4 or 6 valves.
I wouldn't replace it unless you are pretty sure it is wearing. Should sound like it's rattling before it snaps. I remember the sound vividly and thinking...I have to get to the shop. Well it was the holidays and I wanted to hold of on an $800 job until after paying for holiday gifts.
If the job is worth it or not, that is up to you. I disagree that you can replace the car for the cost of the job. For my money, I would replace the chain, sprockets, head gasket and front oil seal. Should give you many leak free, trouble free miles after this repair. You would be damned hard pressed to find a replacement for the cost of the repair...scratch that...you would be hard pressed to find a used car that doesn't require repairs unless you are willing to spend more than 10k.
One thing to keep in mind is the retail value of the car is only relevant if you are going to sell it soon. Outside of that, it is arbitrary. No use dumping a car you are happy with to replace it with a junker or another saab that has the same needs.
