Matthew, David and turrbo are corrrect in regards to the hooter valve, and in fact, one of the sponsor sites make a notation regarding this valve affects idle. I have a 1995 Aero, now with 338 k miles after 10 years , and this past year, I was also dealing with a hunting idle. It was at it's worst when behaving as you cite, near stalling and requiring pedal to keep it going. I have replaced hooter(50$), BPC (220$), PCV (14$) valves, and still had it. Not till I replaced my DI (3rd one in 10 years) did I cure the really bad symptoms.
I was really pissed I had to replace the DI, because the second one only lasted 50k miles, whereas the first lasted me 280k miles !!!
Havind done all the above, I am still wrestling with an occasional idle hunt, but nowhere near as bad as before the new DI. good luck- Tom S.
