I think it is a check valve opposite the feed line. It is to prevent fuel from flowing from the tank back up the return line. But people have gutted the pressure valve and run it in the return with no issues only because they are the only ones sold as a single unit. Maybe try a junkyard and just cut out a return valve. Always lube the o-ring when trying to get these in or out.
