This proved to be a voltage regulator problem. Though there have been reservations enough expressed here for the quality of $15 regulators, that's what I used because I bought it for a diagnostic tool.

My reason for posting the above is to share that two indys and the dealership would not accept the voltage regulator as the problem. All three initially said it had to be the alternator, likely a diode somewhere inside. A free charging system check at both Advance Auto Parts (twice) and Midas Muffler nearby had failed to find *anything* wrong before taking it to them. When subsequently told of these independent checks, the dealer would run its own, and, following their good news, say it had to be a wiring defect somehow, and that it would require another two hours' labor to find that.

Concerning the R&R operation itself, despite the agony reported here and at Quasimotor's site, I found the removal was relatively painless with the main cable to the alternator detached. The problem I had was finding the holes to put the screws in with the alternator facing the other side of the car. And I ultimately had to climb on top of the engine to see them.
