Will 17x8 wheels fit on a '93 Aero?

I've been thinking of buying some new wheels for my '93 Aero. One set I'm considering is 17x8 with an et of 39. I think this means and additional 1.25 inches backspacing and .25 inches on the outside. That sounds like too much backspacing but I know that others have 8 inch wide rims that fit.
Does anyone know how much addition backspacing and "frontspacing" is available over the 16x6.5 et27 wheel?
Any testimonials on what will really fit, and/or how much leeway there really is, are appreciated.
I'm using stock Aero suspension but any input on vehicles with lowering springs would be useful too.
Thanks,
Steve
