I need somebody to convince me to buy better oil like all of the Saab hardcore guys talk about. My problem is not that synthetic oils protect rings, bearings and sleeves better; I am an engineer and understand the physics of quality oil. My problem with shelling out lots of money for quality oil, is that with a high quality engines like the Saab's 2.0 and 2.3, the oiled parts are not the parts the kill the average 9000. ie. The average 9000 loses its value/worthiness between 180k-250K miles because of a single major repair or just plain rattiness factor. (I cannot think of a better word than rattiness. You know. Leather that looks like 90-year-old Florida granny...)

I have owned 4 9000s (1987 9000s, 1987 9000T, 1991 9000T and presently 1995 9000T. Loved them all.) and it is always the rattiness of the interior or a blown head gasket or bad auto trans that makes me give up on repair over buying a newer/cleaner 9000. Why put $1000 into a 1987 with 180K when you can buy a much newer one with 90k for $3000?

Honestly. How many people have worn out rings or valve guides or crank bearings or turbocharger, the parts that are protected by oil? I understand if the year has an issue like 1991-92 with the soft timing gears. There synthetic is called for. A Chrysler Caravan with 100K miles will smoke because of worn low quality rings. Synthetic would be worth it there. I buy 9000s with 90K and run them until 180-200K. Then I sell them for $1500. I have always used $0.90/qt oil changed 3000-5000 miles. Synthetic oil every 3000k miles would have cost me an extra $600 over the 100k miles of usefulness of each car.

Thoughts on how expensive oil will better my life?
