Since you write <it *was* in fact too good to be true> I assume you think the switch is to turn off the TCS system completly and not having any problems with it again, am I right?
That's not the case with the switch. It only turns off the anti spin function of the TCS system. Sometimes if it is really slippery and you need to get up a long uphill stretch, the TCS system can be a problem since it reduces the momentum of your car by either applying the brakes (man) or reducing the throttle (auto) so might get stuck midway uphill.
The whole TCS system still needs to be in full running condition with or without that switch.
You can probably finds tons of information by searching on this board since the question about this "magic switch" comes up quite often.
