So yes, you'd probably want to install first. Then, believe it or not, I use a long screwdriver to very carefully pry the hoses around the corner of the heater box that is supposed to be underneath them.
Use caution so as not to cut a hose or break a fitting, but you can urge the parts past the hoses.
