88T transmission teardown for roadspeed whine(long) Posted by DickT [Email] (#1628) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DickT) on Wed, 29 Jun 2005 17:39:38 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Finally got my tranny apart and so far haven't found anything really bad. I guess that's good news unless it turns out that the teardown wasn't really necessary after all. All of the tapered bearings showed some wear and if I were to pick the one that looked the worst, it would be the passenger side carrier bearing. This is, ironically, the hardest one to get to, the end of the line in disassembly(Timken made in France for those with theories about Saab bearing suppliers). I was under the impresswion that both carrier bearings were the same, but they're not. My local parts store has located most bearings, but not the FAG k15106. Don't know about the needle bearings, haven't looked at them yet.
I snapped off a $12 SK and twisted two $3 "Performance Tool" torx 40s trying to get the cover plate off the output shaft pinion bearing, Wound up drilling an 1/8' hole at the perimeter and whacking it with a small drift to get them loose.
I was having trouble getting into reverse, which I suspect ahd more to do with the bad clutch. The reverse idler gear was worn on the bevels as was the reverse pinion on the output shaft. I plan to use these gears although I may dress off some of the rough edges.
Would appreciate advice from those who've done this before. I would highly recommend studying the saab transmission manual to anyone contemplating a DIY rebuild, and would suggest that you might not want to dive in unless you're comfortable rigging pullers, etc with what's at hand, and are willing to spend a lot of time on a project with no guarantee of success. A transmission shop with experience and proper tools is much better able to do the job. But then some of us just have to try it anyway...
