Rattling timing chain is most likely just a worn guide that fits in to the valve cover. Its at the very top of the timing chain's path. My 93 CSE with 225,000 sounded like a can of screws being thrown down metal stairs (as Ari once described it). I replaced the guide (~$10), now the car is quiet.
Just how would a Saab tech "know" a new timing chain is needed rather than a guide? Doubt this call can be made just by standing next to the car with the motor running. If the chain develops slack, the tensioner takes it back out. At 130,000 miles, the chain and tensioner (and gears) are still "new".
Nothing you mentioned sounds fatal or even expensive. A new transmission just 50,000 miles ago is attractive. Wonder why the car needed a head gasket in its youth?
