With the short impacts from the air impact wrench, the torque rod stays within its elastic limits, so it doesn't get deformed or damaged. The springiness of the torsion is what limits the torque to the presumably correct value, though I'm a bit skeptical as to how accurately they work with widely varying impact wrenches. Each stick does have a different torque rating, due to the level of effective springiness.
I'd prefer a manual torque wrench, but it has to be a choice between using one of those torque sticks or the guy whaling on it directly with an impact wrench, I'd rather he used the gizmo.
I've had too many instances where it came back ridiculously tight, with no chance of the puny tire changer wrench being able to dislodge it. I'd always retorque thing myself after getting it back from a shop.
