Clutch/Transmission Bearing R&R Finished(long) Posted by DickT [Email] (#1628) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DickT) on Wed, 27 Jul 2005 18:14:52 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Just test drove my 88T. Seems to have turned out well.Whine is negligible and it shifts very nicely. I replaced all the tapered roller bearings (I/P, O/P shafts and differential) and the ball bearings on the stub shaft and LH driver. Didn't do the needle bearings. The races of the old bearings had lost plating and were dished and a little spalled. There was obvious wear on the gears and synchros but nothing really bad. Reverse idler gear was pretty beat, but I kept it.
I didn't keep track of my hours , but used a lot of vacation time on the job. I had to shop around for bearings, study the manual, and improvise for pullers, presses, and setting endfloat. I wanted to learn how to do it so I can do a transmission for my son's ng900.
I am not a saab mechanic and cannot recommend that anyone else do this, but if I had to do a clutch on a personal beater with a whine, rather than replace all the bearings, I'd take a chance on slightly tightening up endfloat while the tranny was out. With a dial indicator, the input shaft is set with shims and the output shaft with a new nut, (or maybe even creative use of the old). Preload for the carrier bearings is set with a torque wrench and a puller reversed to press on the LH race.
