Follow the upper radiator hose back to the engine block. You'll see that it fits onto a metal pipe that goes to a domed housing. The thermostat is under that housing. Depending on year, you usually need to remove a bunch of junk bolted to the top of that housing. Also depending on year access to the two bolts holding the domed housing in place can be a little tricky.

With a cold engine, you can remove the dome, and some coolant will come out. Alternatively, you can drain down the coolant a little. I hate opening the drains on radiators, because they usually snap off. Instead, I have an aftermarket windshield washer pump with clip leads on the wires. I stick the input hose into the coolant reservoir tank, the output into a clean bottle and clip the leads to the battery (get the polarity right!). After I've pumped the coolant reservoir empty, I lift it off, and unclamp it from the hose. I then drain the hose down a few inches. That puts it below the thermostat housing.

Remember to install the thermostat with the gasket - it's a rubber piece with a groove that fits over the outer edge of the thermostat.

The only tricky part about changing the thermostat is getting access to the housing. I usually end up removing a few hoses and such.
