Here's one for the wheel bearing folks. 93 9k cse a/t. Time for tires go to local vendor for tires and alignment. After the tires are on the car the tech calls me and says he can't do the alignment my front wheel bearing is almost shot. He shows me all the play move the tire from side to side. Of course they would order and charge me $80 an hour plus parts. Mad because I didn't notice it earlier I went home ordered the parts from eeuro and parked the car until they arrived. Took a day off work to do the repair. Went to break the axle nut and low and behold there was no resistance. So I tightened back and it had moved 3 threads. Testing after tightening there was no play in the tire. Took the tire off examined around and everything seemed in working order. Put tire back on torqued to specs and everything seems honky dory. Checked the other wheel and they were fine except they lost one of the lug bolts.
Could have worked off or could have been deliberate. The fact that they sent me on my way with out telling me about the missing lug bolt as well makes me think the latter. So the moral of the story is if someone tells you the wheel bearing is shot...check the axle nut before letting them do the repair.
