Model year 95 and up should have the new style shift linkage. It is much more expensive, doesn't go south as easily as the older style linkage but can still deteriorate. I think you can have a good look from the passenger side from between the intake and the false bulkhead of if the rubber on the linkage is squeezed out.
Less likely is your shifter may be not in sync with the gears. This can be corrected by aligning the shifter again. The procedure is as follows:
There is a black plastic plug on the gear box. Shift into 4th. Pull that plug. Insert a small phillips screw driver into the hole to lock the gear box in fourth. Next loosen the collar bolt on the shift linkage (13mm socket). Then get inside the driver seat. Peel open the shifter boot or leather cover. You need a stiff bent rod to insert into the hole in front of the shifter which also goes into a hole on the shift rod with the shifter in fourth. I use I cut and bent 3/16" piece of brake line but any old rod which is short enough and bent will do. Once that is aligned, go tighten the collar bolt on the shift linkage in the engine compartment. Now you remove the rod in the cabin and that on the gear box, reinsert the black plastic plug and your gears should be crisp and precise.
