Ah yes, that debacle. Sure enough, the slave cylinder was stuck in the extended position. I have no idea why, nor has anyone else heard of the problem. The symptoms, in addition to a permanently engaged clutch, were a very soft pedal and a loss of brake fluid when I pressed the pedal. The clutch would pressure bleed firm but as soon as a pressed the pedal I had fluid loss and a soft pedal. Looking into the bell housing and comparing to another 9k, it was obvious that the clutch was in the engaged position.

The old slave looked factory and I plan to take it apart eventually to see how it failed. A new slave fixed the problem and the car has been fine since (to the best of my knowledge anyway, I sold it a few months back).
