On my car I installed E-code lights with H4s, and have had no problems with the new relay I bought at the same time, 5 years ago. I even run 80/100W bulbs, but they are starting to melt the connectors and only last about a year. The standard H4 bulbs are about the same wattage as the 9004s. I did notice the wiring in my US Saab was thinner than the wiring that came with the European connectors. I can't tell if that was thicker gage wire or just more insulation.
