Yeah, just went through that. You have two problems. 1. the headlight leaks, that is why it is dirty. 2. you have to make a special cleaning tool, but its easy.
Here is what I learned/did:
Go to a medical/hospital/home care supply and get some swabs... they are 1 inch square sponges on a rolled paper stick. Get a bunch of them. tape a swab to a section of wire coat hanger.
go to the parts store and get a tube of clear silicon sealer (permatex makes a good one)
1. remove the headlight from the car, much easier to work on.
2. get an ammonia based glass cleaner
3. spray or pour the ammonia based cleaner into the headlight and swish it around. make sure you get into the corners and the recesses in the reflector. Then pour it out. Not all will come out.
4. use the homemade special cleaning tool to scrub inside the headlight...glass and reflector... and soak up excess cleaner. take your time on this.
5. let it air dry... also take your time
6. run a bead of the clear silicon sealer around the seam where the glass and reflector meet. be generous, this is where your leak is.
7. let everything set for a while...
8. replace the headlight, insert the bulb
The heat from the bulb will cause condensation for a couple of days. best way to dal with this is pop the bulb out in the evening or during the day if the car is going to sit for a while(and it isn't going to rain).
In a couple of days all the moisture will be gone and the new seal will keep the dirt and gunk out.
at least that is what I did and it worked perfectly
