Could be the tranny, but it could be a ton of other things too (anything from the idler pulley to a wheel bearing).
Try just revving the engine up while stopped and with the clutch in. Anything? Does it make the noise in all gears and at all road speeds, does it make it in neutral with the clutch out, with the clutch in? Have you checked the fluid level?
Hopefully it's something minor. There's a lot that can make a whinning noise, and these transmission often last a very long time (though some don't!).
