Interesting posts here.
I have 3 '97 9K's....1 CSE anni/auto 113K modified, 1 CSE anni/auto 165K, 1 Aero/auto 78K. I purchased all of them used...in the North East. Only one had a rust issue on one fender...which I replaced. They all have the original trans. They are in good condition, Structurally as new, and run well. The modified one is pretty fast. They all get good mileage, are safe and drive great. If something breaks...I fix it. Change all the fluids regularly and replace worn parts.
Recently, when faced with the decision of purchasing an inexpensive new car, like a Hyundai, or a used Toyo truck for my two sons....I opted for the used 9K's. Changed all the fluids, flushed the trans. Bought the all weather matts for the trunk. Took off the wheel hub covers and replaced with Saab hub emblems. I did have to dump 48 oz's of Leatherique on the of the interiors. They run and drive better than some new cars....And, are the car of choice when they go on trips with their buddies. Funny how that worked out.
My point is this...All cars are expensive to fix. If you try to fix on the cheap...then you will most likely fix more often.
There is no retirement age for a 9000. If taken care of it will last as long as there is still gasoline.
A good example of this is the most recent hubbabaloo about sludge in the 9-3's. The stupid people that wrote the service manual decided to extend the oil change intervals....I guess in an attempt to get more customers to purchase Saabs on the premise that they are more durable and reliable because Saab some figured out a way to not have to change dirty oil? Well that back fired...All that was need? Change the oil....at regular intervals...no sludge. It will cost GM a fortune for this blunder and turn away a lot loyalists.

It really boils down to....What do you want to drive? Some drive Saabs to prove their individuality or quirkyness. some for performance, safety, utility? Someone on the general BB said it best. Saabs are interesting.
The 9000's, espesially the later 90's models, are hard to beat for most road assualt situations.
