To say that Nakamichi makes an excellent product is putting it a bit lightly. They are considered the reference standard by many in the industry (for head units, anyway). They are also super expensive ($1100+). There wouldn't be much sense in putting in a Nak head unit unless you were planning to spend big money on the rest of your system.
I have an Alpine in my '94 and I think it's much better than the Sony and Kenwood units that came before. Installation is a piece of cake, because the factory head unit is a DIN unit like most aftermarket head units. As MikeC suggests, the stereo is an odd setup. Your best bet is to run new wires to all four speakers and power them off the head unit's internal amp or (better still) an external amp.
Of course, if you're looking for something that sounds really good, I've heard great things about the Alpine F#1 Status systems... :)
