Auto Trans as a DIY Project?

Well I checked with several local shops in the metro DC area, including TSN sponsors. The estimates for a transmission change in my son's '95 CDE (V6) are outrageous! Does $3900 sound right?? Erikson is quoting $1700 plus shipping to me. Is the auto trans a DIY job? I've done just about everything else except trannies - including engine pull on my '74 99. Are there any procedures posted somewhere?
