It's starting getting colder (around 0 to -10 F), and I've now noticed a prominent noise coming from the belt and pullies, especially on start up. It's louder when cold, but still noticeable when fully hot. Sounds like unhappy bearings to me, and it's directly related to engine speed (higher rev, faster the "whirl" noise).

Is there a simple way of diagnosing the culprit? I imagine it could be the P/S pump, water pump, alternator (relatively new though), or any of the pullies in the chain. Is the only real way to know to take off the belts and inspect each?

I've been monitoring the harmonic balancer for slip for a few weeks, and no problem there. I tightened the multi-groove belt a few weeks ago, but the noise has just recently started. The v-belt could be tightened a little, but isn't showing signs of slipping. Thanks to anyone with sage words of wisdom.....
