The model years that are considered more desirable:
The '91, because this was the first year the hatchback had the 200 hp 2.3L engine, plus an upgraded suspension and close ratio gearing. Some call this the "Aero Jr." However, it does not have Trionic, so upgrading it is not as easy. In '92, the traction control throttle was introduced, and some consider this problemmatic, but there were also more color choices available than in '91 for the 9000 turbo. The '91 and '92 have very interesting looking 3-spoke alloy wheels which unfortunately corrode on their unfinished rim areas. However, they look great when new or when refurbished, best of any Saab wheel ever, IMO. I got one re-done a year ago and it's starting to fade already.
The '97 Aero would be very desirable, with Trionic 7. In '98 the Aero was not produced. Instead, they upgraded the 9000CSE to Aero engine specs. However, it does not have the Aero seats or body panels, and I'm not sure about suspension components.
The interior and rear end of the middle body style, used in the '90 9000CD (not sure if also '89), up through '92, is exactly the same as the first body style, introduced in 1986. In '93, the third and last body style was introduced, with changes to front end, rear end, and small changes in the interior, especially around the hatch area. That hatch area feels a bit more spacious. Airbags were present on the passenger side on '95 (used to have one).
As you can see below, I've owned all three body styles. My favorite of all these three is the '91.
