Both SAABS that I have (1990 9000 and 1984 900S) are both pre-GM and I love the classic 900 look that was lost in 1994. In the early to mid-90's there was much discussion as to the demise of SAAB due to the GM influence. Yet I read from the Discussion Boards many good reports of the later SAABS that were produced under GM ownship. I especially hear positive reports about the mid-90's Aeros and the autos that were produced after the new model "growing years" of the late 1990's.
I would like to hear some opinions on whether the takeover by GM was positive for SAAB. Could SAAB have made it by going alone? Also if a buyout was necessary was GM the right parent company to do so? I know that Ford now owns Volvo and Jaguar.
What might the future hold for SAAB?
I realize that independent car companies existing in 2005 are becoming rare? I read an article in the 1960's that predicted that in the future there would be 3-5 major car corporations in the entire world with many cars playing the look-alike game and car individuality would be lost. Has this happened?
I am real interested in seeing how classic SAAB owners, New Generation SAAB owners, and recent model SAAB owners respond to these questions.
