Radiator Woes - Tank Cracking Posted by goodwrenchldj [Email] (#2641) [Profile/Gallery] (more from goodwrenchldj) on Mon, 28 Nov 2005 18:41:48 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I am the original owner of a 1991 9000 that has accumulated 243K miles. On 10/04/05 at 236,700 miles I noticed a small crack on the top of the radiator tank near the upper hose fitting. Since I was about 1,000 miles from home I repaired it with JB Weld. I posted a message on the 9000 BB at that time and asked if anyone had successfully repaired a radiator tank. The responses that I got suggested that I replace the radiator. I should have done it then! Last Saturday was, thank God, cold here in the Northeast. I drove 150 miles from NJ to VA and during the trip noticed that the temp gauge was indicating slightly warmer that normal, but still way below the red. When I got home I opened the hood and discovered that the upper hose fitting had cracked all the way around and that the hose was not atatched to the radiator. Even though I had suffered a massive coolant leak the car did not overheat. I am really lucky. The outside temperature was in the high 20s and I never ran into traffic. I guess the thermostat was closed for the entire trip. Some of the hose atatchment fitting remained and I repositioned the hose clamp and attached the end of the upper hose to it. It took almost a gallon of coolant to top off the system. Today, I changed the radiator. I had purchased it last week but did not have the time to change it before my Thanksgiving trip.
