It sounds like the started is remaining engaged or not quite disengaging. Then I don't hear it for some time. But, yeah, there is kind of a sheet metal sound to it.
When this happened on my wife's Exploder, we replaced the starter. Then it happened again about 3 months later. Turns out the flex plate was cracked and as it got worse the starter was unevenly engaging the teeth on the flex plate. Seems to depend on where on the flex plate the teeth were bad, and as the crack got worse it happened in more places.
On my '96 it can't be a flex plate as that car is a 5 speed, so I suspect the starter is the issue. Winter, though, is not the time I really want to investigate this.
