Yes, if you lose belt tension, overheating is your most immediate problem. Note my post below where this just happened to me due to a failed tensioner pulley (at -30 F and 1 AM....).
I too had been having "squeaks" at start up before this happened, and also have been monitoring the harm. balancer (no slippage). Just a few weeks before I had done an inspection of the pullies with the belts off, and the most obvious suspect was the serp belt tensioner pulley. Didn't get to replacing it soon enough! Mine ('90kt) is an easier set up to deal with since you have an auto tensioner on a '94, but the Haynes manual gives some details on how to proceed if you want to. Quasi is, as usual, helpful as well:
