Specifically, it's a very good idea to make sure the local tire shop you frequent doesn't have a problem or charge more for tires you supply. Some don't, but some of the big chains, like Discount Tire Co. and Les Schwab, do. For instance, if you buy the tires from them, you pay about $8-12 per tire for mounting and balancing. If you bring in your own tires, you pay $25 (!!) per tire! And, Les Schwab also told me that doing so would mean I would have to leave my car with them all day and they would get to it 'when they could', working around their 'paying' customers. Needless to say, I'm not going to Les Schwab to have my new car's stock tires remounted onto some aftermarket wheels.
So watchout! If you order from Tire Rack, your savings will completely dissolve if you don't have a local shop that will mount tires you supply at the same price. Years ago I ordered through Tire Rack, and at that time they had a list of shops in my area they work with, to where they could ship the tires, which makes for a pretty convenient arrangement. However, just looking this year, their list of recommended local shops has shrunken significantly.
Also agree that you usually get better customer service if you just do everything through the local shop, rather than having them try to accomodate all your special needs with your supplied parts. If you do find a shop that gives the same service regardless of your 'out of the ordinary' needs, that's a great shop!
