My car needs some help. It takes 12-20 turns of the key to start the engine. During those attempts, interior electronics turn on and there is a click from under the hood, but no engine turning over. The amount of key attempts increases when I don't use the car for several days. People have told me a bad/dirty solenoid might be the culprit. I brought the problem to a reputable Saab mechanic in San Francisco and paid $110 to for a diagnostic. Their answer was a bad battery cell and a faulty headlight relay. Both were replaced costing me a decent amount of money but the problem still persists. In addition, my car now has an idling problem where it'll drop to <500 rpms and the headlights and internal lights dim and the engine occasionally stalls.
But wait there's more...
Four hundred dollars later and I am in worse shape. When I turn the key to turn the car off, the engine does not stop running. One way to stop the engine is to turn the headlight dial on the dash from the 2:00 position to the 10:00 position. When the engine turns off, I am left with the headlights stuck on. The only way to turn them off now is to disconnect the battery.
Can anyone out there give me an answer/guess for free that I can take back to the mechanic? I think they need help solving this whole thing. I would love to tell them that someone on the net solved my problem for free without even taking a voltmeter to the thing. That would make my day.
