I have an Ericksson rebuilt 5 spd in my '91 9kt. They know the ZF transmission, but I called them and asked exactly what they replace. Only what is worn below specs, was the answer. That is, something barely within specs passes. Within a short time, it may be below specs. I developed some other problems with this tranny (wouldn't shift properly), and the dealership rebuilt it. They said the main bearing was below specs and was beginning to show some slop.
The other thing about a rebuilt is that you don't "know where it's been." It may have failed catastrophically, and many components took a beating. Remember, the rebuilt tranny you get was once someone else's core. If your existing tranny is not bad, just wearing out in some ways, consider having a trusted rebuilder work on yours, perhaps Ericksson. That way, you can discuss the whole job with them and ask about various components. Of course, you'll be without your car for longer that way.
