I think my subjective criteria/guidelines are:
1. Part has "some" chance of failing (so depends on when last replaced and expected lifetime).
2. Failure would strand you.
3. Part not so bulky or heavy (so this rules out, e.g., another engine).
4. Part not so expensive (to minimize idle capital).
5. Part not so cheap (otherwise can just buy it from dealer that you will be towed to).
6. Part expensive enough that if you were forced to buy it from dealer instead of discount mail order, you would be unhappy).
I carry: serpentine belt, thermostat, full-size spare tire.
Tools: breaker bar with 19 mm socket, chain (pic), straps, rope, duct tape, gloves, small socket/torx set, usual small tools.
Cell phone and address/numbers of SAAB dealers within 100 miles or so of route.
Not a AAA member anymore but if you call them (especially after hours when the nearest dealer where you want to be towed to is already closed), I am hoping ... will they be so kind as to recommend and give contact info for a towing company?
