The red ones usually die slower....not always.... I have seen them just pop and die, two clients over the years while driving. The majority of them loose just one coil, or a coil under load. Car still starts and runs...but tells you something is up...As opposed to last week '99 9-5 48k dead and would not start.
There are no ill effects at all, or risks to the electronics using the black in place of red...Have done it in my own cars, friends cars, and clients who want to get a better price on getting their car back on the road.
