The thermostat is oriented vertically, with the vent hole to the top, spring pointed inwards towards the cylinder head. Make sure the rubber ring is positioned uniformly around the edge of the t-stat. I tend to change the coolant whenever changing the t-stat, even if it's fairly new.
I don't think the finger wagging about preventative maintenance is indicated here. I have had the same thermostat in my '88 9kt since we purchased it in '95, and for all I know it was the original t-stat. The rest of the car is failing around the thermostat. The coolant temp is rock steady in that car, better than in the other two 9kt's I've owned. Sure, they tend to wear out, sometimes just in a couple of years, but certain units appear to last a long time. Since they're so easy to replace, I'd recommend not fixing it if it ain't broke. However, keeping a spare in the trunk is never a bad idea, because you can't get an OEM t-stat when you need it.
