I'm not sure of what running changes they may make in the VR - it's very possible that whatever device you saw on the old VR was incorporated into the guts of the new VR. I wouldn't worry.

As to the lack of a Battery light - I WOULD worry. To make the alternator work, current goes through the key, through the light bulb and into the VR to power the alternator field coils. If the bulb is burned out, no current flows, and the field coils would never come on-line. Since you get a good 13.7 volts, that's not the case.

So what if somebody simply wired the bulb out? Or, the bulb failed shorted (rare but possible). Then current would flow, the field coils would charge, and the alternator would work. Seems OK, right?

Actually, no. The bulb acts as a resistor, and performs the task of current limiting into the alternator. Also, the battery voltage would be fighting with the VR to control the field coils. This would eventually burn out the VR.

The only other thought I can come up with is the bulb is there, but is entirely the wrong wattage. It is coming on, but so dimly you don't see it. That means less than normal current is flowing into the field coils, but it might just be enough for the alternator to kick start. Theoretically OK, but anything that throws off that delicate balance (temperature, engine speed, phase of the moon) and the alternator won't work. And no battery light to tell you.

If you disconnect the thin green (or yellow) wire from the back of the VR and touch it to ground (engine OFF, key ON) the battery light should come on. If it doesn't, you need to troubleshoot the problem. Otherwise, your charging system may fail prematurely.
