losing coolant, reservoir hiSSSing Posted by rob [Email] (#1828) [Profile/Gallery] (more from rob) on Fri, 27 Jan 2006 15:13:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
This happens to be on an old 89 9000T, but I doubt that's important. A few weeks ago I started losing coolant. Eventually it was tracked down to the heater core. Long story short, replaced it and the hoses for it with the updated unit. Good, ok, for about 3 weeks. Then...
Driving along after 25 miles at 75, I see the dash warning come on, radiator coolant low. I look at the heat gauge, a little high but not that alarming, only a mile from home. Get home, let the system cool down for 2 hours, check it, reservoir looks empty, add coolant to Max line. No evidence of leaks anywhere in engine area or on ground. Let it sit overnight.
New day, check under hood and car, no evidence, drive out 2 mile RT. Getting home, I see my heat gauge is a bit up again. Check under hood, coolant is coming out fast from the reservoir cap! Think, I must've not screwed on cap right, hmmm. Let it sit 2 hours. Go out, open up, go to unscrew cap, and coolant Still wants to exit there, not hot. Tighten back up. Wait 2 hours again.
Check again. Not leaking. Open it up, level seems right. Start car, let idle, level still seems right. Call Saab mechanic. "Maybe previous heater core issue, may need head gasket, is there white smoke out the exhaust?" Well yes there is. "Probably just the gasket". Hmmm. OK, what to do then.
Ah, a test drive, watching heat gauge closely. Get about 4 miles at 50-55, gauge goes up, still not more than 10 o'clock though. Get cautious, reduce to 45 (LOL), see gauge go down to normal 8:30 o'clock. Pull over, check under, nothing happening nowheres. Turn around, drive home.
Home, check under, hear HISSING sound, no other evidence, no leaking. Move ears around, it's coming from the reservoir, DEFINITELY. Letting car sit again now.
Does the cap have its own gasket? Could that be it? Or is it the head gasket? Or what? Going to mechanic to diagnose/pressure-test, hmm, too broke now. THAT'S WHY I'M POSTING!
