Axel shaft failure

My 97 9K with 67k miles on it had a sudden failure of the right shaft. A new one was ordered and installed but it pushed out of the differential. The part number was then checked and discovered that it was the wrong part number and that the proper shaft is longer. Had only driven the car 1000 miles since purchase. How did it work at all? What can say to the seller who is a Saab Mechanic?
Arrragh!
