In regards to the bad sound with the monster tape adapter: I am really picky with sound quality too, and I found I had to run a wet tape cleaner through the saab deck 4 or 5 times before I got a real crisp quality sound out of it. I'd say it now rivals CD quality music. I have all my CDs ripped at 192kbps MP3s and they sound as good as a CD, and I've had other people say the same thing. You've gotta play with it, turn off all the noise cancelling options on the deck and clean the heads.
Before the tape adapter solution, I tried an inline FM modulator (hooks in right to the back of the radio, inline with the antenna connection), that sounded WORSE that a regular fm transmitter... so much hissssssing when any "S" was spoken/sung.
I hesitate to buy an aftermaket deck because I'd lose the equilizer, which I find myself using a lot with my sorta-expensive speaker/sub setup, especially with the varied music tastes I have (I'll go from Ben Folds to the Buddy Rich Big Band, to Eminem, to talk radio).
