In most cases, the 9000 auto is much lower maintanance han the 5-speed.
If you drop the fluid every other oil change(replace filter and change the fluid every 2-3000 miles for the first 9000 miles, if regular changes aren't documented in service records), the auto-trans will last forever.
The other factor is driving style. Avoid FULL power downshifts, drive the car like a high powered gentleman's touring car rather than a stoplight racer, and you'll do well.
My history
88 9000, sold with 200K, original auto trans, no problems
96 CS, 130K, original auto-trans, my daughter's daily driver
96 CS, FPT conversion, 201K, original auto-trans, engine replaced at 90K, my daily driver.
This myth about bad automatic transmissions is something that started with the 900 series, and even on those cars the automatics were as relilable as the manuals, unless badly abused.
Fortunately, Saab makes changing the filter/fluid incredibly easy on these cars. 3 screws/bolts and 10 minutes and the job is done. No pans to drop, no gaskets to clean off and replace.
I used to be a manual transmission guy, but the automatics are so nice on these cars it really doesn't matter. You will give up a couple of MPG, but when you factor in the cost of replacing a clutch or slave cylinder, long term $ wise it is at worst a wash, and might even be cheaper overall with the automatic.
