The lever itself is pretty easy to remove. I'll try and describe it, but as you get into it, it becomes pretty straightforward.

Right in front of the shift lever, on the horizontal plastic surround, is a little plastic button. Pop it out, and you'll see a little (torx?) screw underneath. Remove it. Shift the lever as far back as you can. On the back of the handle are two screws - remove them. Now, you can pull the handle up and off. You may have to squeeze the reverse buttons - I forget.

With the lever pulled as far back as you can, gently pry up the front of the plate, where you pulled the first screw out. Move the plate forward slightly to disengage the rear of the plate, then move the shifter as far forward as possible (park) to allow the rear of the plate to come up. Slide the plate up and off. Gently pull the bulb out as you lift the plate off (it'll make sense when you do it).

Basically, there is a plastic plate that sits on the center tunnel. There is a piece of plastic that has the PRD32L numbers on it, and it's longer than the plate. You want to move that piece of plastic around (moving the shifter backwards and forwards) so that you can disengage one end at a time.

You now have full access to the shifting mechanism. All it consists of is a lever and a cable. A number of things could have gone wrong, to and including something just got jammed up in there.
