Certainly can't argue with the Saab factory spec!
The last oil pan I did, I was going back in to fix the after-effects of the previous person (whoever that was) who appeared to have used clear silicone sealant. Hmmm, works for my shower, must also work for my car, right?
I think Permatex Blue is significantly cheaper than the 518 too. The 518 recommendation did come from the Saab corporate tech trainer, but maybe he figured since I'd be using it on the timing cover too it would just be easier to use it everywhere. Or perhaps 518 is considered so effective that even an average moron will get good results.
BTW, I suspect the 518 spec on the timing cover is because it forms a better adhesive barrier and resists oil infiltration better. When I've seen leaking covers it seems as if the sealant has allowed a thin layer of oil to work between it and the block, and eventually becomes a steady leak. But in at least one case, the lower compressor bracket bolt had stripped and at idle there was a constant jack-hammer effect on the timing cover as a result, so that may have been the real cause.
