Maybe it had an aluminium or zinc coating which has not survived the welding process at the joint (see a post today on the Performance board). Anyway, most exhausts seem to go at joints or the flex section, and if you can feel a leak you know it's there even if you can't see it!
Not quite sure from your post if the leak is at a clamped joint or a welded one. If the former, there might be slots in the pipe to help the joint go together - if so you could maybe use a band clamp to help seal over them.
Welding joints certainly works but you don't know how long for - maybe the best plan is to get the weld done and use the time to find an affordable replacement because you're probably going to need it pretty soon. It also makes sense to be sure all rubber hangers etc. are in good condition to avoid straining the system.
