try the townsend trick, but rest the wrench against something. don't let it bang into it, it can fly off and break things.
it may take a few tries (set it up and just bump the starter with the key) and it'll probably fly off each time, but it will work.
never failed me yet, on many different makes and models (except corvairs and 4 cyl hondas)
or try the 4th gear trick, but have someone stand on the brakes while you do it.
